TECH BRIDGE: Creative Approach To Workforce Development

Accenture and ServiceNow are assisting TechBridge and Goodwill of North Georgia with their innovative approach to workforce training. In conjunction with the Fall kick-off of the Technology Career Program, TechBridge recently talked with Kate Sumowski, Senior Program Manager, NextGen Program at ServiceNow and Paul Blair, Product Manager at Accenture about the impact of the program.

Kate Sumowski shared, “ServiceNow is working with TechBridge to help bridge the talent gap within the ServiceNow ecosystem. We are looking to do that with a philanthropic twist and work with people that wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to work in the tech industry.”

Charged with the purpose of enrolling unemployed or underemployed adults from mostly low-income communities into customized, high-demand tech training, the TechBridge Technology Career Program is designed to put each certified student on the first rung of the IT career ladder to enable the graduate to climb toward a future with decades of stable household income. The double aims of this fast-track training approach is to fill the talent gap for mid-income technology jobs in Georgia and to break the cycle of generational poverty that exists for many families. The Technology Career Program is celebrating its inaugural year of providing this free, part-time four-month technology and business education program.

GDOT Moreland/Arkwright Intersection Project Public Meeting – **TONIGHT**

Tuesday, September 3, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is hosting a public meeting for a project to improve the intersections of Moreland Avenue with both Arkwright Place and Memorial Drive. The work will involve resurfacing, lane reconfiguration, sidewalk and ADA ramp improvements, and signal upgrades. It will also include a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) that will serve as a critical pedestrian and bicycle crossing for the Trolley Trail project.

A key question is where this Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon is located relative to the current intersection of Arkwright Place and Moreland Avenue. Some early designs for this project pushed the crossing north on Moreland away from the natural crossing point at Arkwright.

There is enough flexibility to create a pathway that functions for the way people actually cross streets from point to point. We’re asking GDOT to prioritize safety for all road users by creating a natural crossing point for the Trolley Trail.

HERE ARE TWO WAYS TO TAKE ACTION:

1. Attend the public meeting and speak up in support of multi-use trails and LIT (Light Individual Transportation) lanes that make streets safer and more convenient for all users.

WHEN: Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: First Iconium Baptist Church, 542 Moreland Ave. SE map

The church is near East Atlanta Village and is served by MARTA bus routes #4, #32, #74, and #107.

2. Sign the petition for LIT lanes now and stay up to date on the campaign’s progress.

Blank Foundation Gives $17.5 Million for Westside Park

Largest gift in Atlanta BeltLine Partnership history supports forthcoming capital campaign

At this week’s State of the BeltLine, Mayor Bottoms had a very special announcement to share: The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has awarded a $17.5 million grant to Atlanta BeltLine Partnership to support development of Westside Park.

With the first phase anticipated to open in 2020, Westside Park will eventually become the largest greenspace in the city of Atlanta. Spanning approximately 280 acres when complete, the Park will serve as a catalyst for surrounding historic communities and create a destination greenspace for both neighboring residents and the region.

Joining the City’s $26.5 million investment in the first phase of Westside Park, we’re thrilled to share that this grant will enhance public access, neighborhood connectivity, and long-term sustainability of approximately 50 acres of this 280-acre greenspace.

It’s also the lead gift in our forthcoming expanded capital campaign, and will build on the $4.1 million raised to support the creation of Atlanta BeltLine Interim Trails. Combined with public and other identified sources of funding, this proposed campaign will activate five shovel-ready parks and trails and the continued creation of interim trails. Learn more!
