Citizens CourtWatch

The Office of the City Solicitor will implement its inaugural Citizens Court Watch Program on Monday, October 7, 2019, at Municipal Court, 150 Garnett Street SW, Courtroom 5A at 8:00 AM. Often dubbed the ‘eyes and ears’ of the community in court, CourtWatch was initially created by District Attorney Howard as a vehicle to engage average citizens in the criminal justice system. As Community Prosecutors track cases involving repeat offenders and those of general interest to the community, CourtWatchers are encouraged to attend court proceedings and, when deemed appropriate by the Court, offer perspective regarding the impact a defendant’s criminal activity has on a community. As you may know the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office handles Felony cases while we will implement this program to focus on those areas enforced by the City of Atlanta Solicitor’s Office, namely City of Atlanta ordinances and code violations.

There are several upcoming cases on the calendar that citizens have expressed an interest in tracking outcomes. Our office encourages community involvement to show the critical impact these cases have on the quality of life in neighborhoods. Citizens are invited to attend court during trial week. The first week of each month is trial week unless the beginning of the month falls on a Tuesday, then it will be the following week. All trials are at the Municipal Court, 150 Garnett Street SW, Courtroom 5A at 8:00 AM. For additional information about this new initiative, please contact Rene W. Pennington at Rwpennington@Atlantaga.gov or Mi-Lan B. Henderson at MBhenderson@Atlantaga.gov.

Atlanta mayor unveils $5M plan to create safer streets, triple protected bike lane network

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms this morning unveiled a $5 million plan to make 20 miles of intown streets more accommodating and safer for non-drivers.

Bottoms’s action plan, a highly anticipated response to recent e-scooter-related injuries and fatalities, is projected to triple the amount of protected bike lanes within city limits before the end of 2021, her office told Curbed Atlanta.

The project aims to put 20 high-traffic—and oftentimes, dangerous—city corridors through “rapid implementation changes to improve safety for people who walk, drive, take transit, or ride a bike or e-scooter,” according to a City of Atlanta press release.
